Description

This course provides the student with a survey of the entire field of special education. Prospective teachers and paraprofessionals will learn the causes and characteristics of a variety of disabilities, as well as the effects of disabilities on educational programs. Students will learn various local, state, national, administrative, and legislative provisions for children and youth with disabilities. Disabilities included in the course are: mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, multiple handicaps, physical disabilities, communication disorders, hearing impairments, deafness, vision impairments, blindness, traumatic brain injury and other health impairments. The course will also explain what federal law requires you to do as a special educator, including new requirements added in IDEA '97.
