This course offers a detailed study of the legal aspects of health care with skills necessary to ensure a legal health record including the documentation standards, principles of confidentiality, release of information practice standards, retention guidelines for health information, and patients? rights. Medical Law & Ethics focuses on the creation and maintenance of the health record, the HIPAA and Privacy Act Law, liabilities, and discoveries. The Health Information Management professional?s role, code of ethics, and professional consumer advocacy are emphasized. (Fall, Spring, Summer)
